they were still dominant/elite in the 90s. When Osborne retired they were obviously going to take a hit, although solich kept them respectable and still ran the option. When he was let go they had a string of like 5 HCs that were all mostly garbage and they stopped running the option.

They were dominant because they were the only Big 12 team taking non qualifiers.

They lost around 7 bowl games in a row in the late 80's early 90's and Osborne made a conscious effort bring in high risk guys to catch up with the FSU's and Miami's of the CFB world.
