The teams I would call nationally great/elite, as somewhat mentioned already, are:

Richt:

01 UT and UF
03 LSU (twice)

that's it. None of the bowl participants would qualify

Smart:
17 AU/OU/AL
18 AL

You consider the 2017 Auburn team which finished #10 in the final AP poll elite but not the 2018 LSU team that destroyed ya'll and finished #6? Personally I don't think either were elite but I'm curious as to how you came to this conclusion.

Mark Richt was Andy Reid. A good guy who was a good coach for the duration of a long season, where an even keeled personality is a plus, but lacks that "Win or Die" mentality that coaches who win National Championships require. Without that big game mindset, Richt was never going to take Georgia to the ultimate level.

It seems as if Kirby has something approaching that mentality, but it's not a guarantee that it will lead to NC's or not.

Anything uga-related with LSU fans always somehow points back to last year's game. It's uncanny. But to answer your question:

-AU lost in week 2 on the road @clemson by 1 possession. Clemson ended up being a playoff team
-They trounced some people, then lost by 4 on the road @LSU
-They then went on a tear of beating people not even close really, including #2 UGA then 2 weeks later a concensus #1 bama that had only lost 1 game in the last 2 seasons

That AU team was on fire and was ranked #2 in the country and 1 game from the playoffs. We ended up whooping them, then they gave up on the season and lost their bowl game. But you're absolutely foolish if you think hte team that played UCF in December is the same one that was playing uga/bama in November. That team was elite following the regular season.

-For LSU, they didnt' play anyone that would end up worth a flip until @Florida in october, which they lost.
-They beat UGA at home which all lsu fans will remember for eternity, it seems.
-They got their toughest opponent, alabama, at home and were thoroughly embarrassed by 29 without scoring a single point
-A few weeks later they would play an aTm team that ended with 4 losses and lose again

I'm by no means saying LSU was bad last year. In fact they were a really good team that deserved their top 10 ranking. But last year's LSU team doesn't belong on the same plane with '17 AL/OU or '18 AL. I think '17 AU does, and they proved as such. The only reason that '18 LSU team is so highly thought of is sipmly because of hte UGA game, plain and simple. It was the worst game we played all year until the sugar bowl and probably the best LSU played all year. And I'm not taking anything away from LSU, obviously they won and earned every bit of it. But that one game doesn't elevate them to some higher status.
