A&M... what’s the story behind the infamous gif?

So many questions-
What prompted the cheerleaders on cheerleader attack?
Who was this rogue cheerleader?
Was he ever reprimanded for trying to attack someone with a sword?

The cadet got mad because the SMU cheerleaders were on the field when they weren’t supposed to be. He ran out their to get all little man syndrome on them. The SMU cheerleaders did the classic push someone while someone else is on all fours behind their legs so they fall down. The cadet then pulled the saber because he was getting clowned on. Very embarrassing all around. Pretty sure he got expelled for it.

This is what happened ...
"It's funny how this comes up so often, nearly 24 years after it happened. Between some of the people who posted here and were eye witnesses to the event, they got it mostly right.
I was a high school senior, already accepted to A&M and at the game on a school trip, sitting in the horseshoe, watching my Aggies get whipped by the pony express (Dickerson and James, but they had a good team then).
It was late in the game and SMU scored again. I think the final score was 27-7 or something. Anyway, the SMU cheerleaders ran onto the endzone in front of the old horseshoe and laid down to spell SMU. Hood ran over and yelled at them, then he kicked at one of them. I don't recall if he actually made contact or not, but he wasn't exactly putting all his strength into it or anything.
At that point the cheerleaders started to jump up. One of them got behind Hood and as another poster stated, another cheerleader pulled the old schoolyard trick and pushed him over the guy laying behind him.
I'll never forget what happened next. Hood kind of did a backwards roll and as he was coming to his feet he drew his sabre, all in one motion. He took about 2 steps forward and brandished the sabre, but was no closer than 4 or 5 feet away. I recall other OD's or maybe a yell leader running up at this point and pulling him away, but my memory is a little hazy on that point."
The video is the end of the altercation, and he is closer than 4-5'
FYI, the cadet paid a heavy price for his stupidity. He was suspended for his actions, and thrown out of the Cadet Corps

Back in those days societal pressure had the Aggies still trying to stay in the closet, so when the SMU guys called that yell leader "gay" all his pent up, closeted aggression exploded and he tried to stab those male cheerleaders with his sword since he couldn't admit he really wanted to stab them with his penis.
The yell leader was charged with attempted murder. In prison he was able to come to terms with his homosexual feelings and came out of the closet. After he was released from prison he did an interview on Oprah about his coming out journey. The interview was very inspirational, very brave. Inspired the rest of the Aggies to finally be honest with themselves and embrace their homosexuality.

The video is after the first shove - the hat is already on the ground. He came up and brandished the sword at the dude who tripped him, though he is DEFINITELY closer than 4-5'. You can see the security guys coming in to stop it
Doesn't matter. Dude should be embarrassed not only for pulling the saber, but also losing a fight to a damned cheerleader.

The SWC was a backstabbing, cheating, hateful place.
Mostly Texans.

Here’s another good one LINK
TLDR version, cadets in 1926 stole a cannon with the intention of shelling Baylor after a fight between us resulted in the death of an Aggie
