Good to know.

Why is it so hard to get funding for facilities and care when traveling across the south and midwest there is no facilities and god knows the south has their share. As an Auburn fan you were probably aware of the issues with Pat Dye's daughter yet it seemed like several years before they could do anything and even then resources and facilities were lacking.

A close family member was living about a block away from the church killer in SC a few years ago. In conversations with folks around there everybody knew there were issues but nobody could get him care. Mental health by police is not only 6x cost of long term care but totally ineffective as a 24 hour hold is not say, the month needed for meds to kick in and gain traction. In addition, jail is the worst place for the mentally vulnerable yet that is where they get sent.

I am no longer young and it worries me we seem to be going in opposition of mental health needs. If I were in my 20's now I would be lobbying hard for a future crash as the boomers age and more issues develop. A 50 year old on a medication that works may be a problem at 70 when the problem still exists and the medication no longer works. I am dealing with one now I can tell when their hand begins to shake and the outburst is only moments away.

We need to bring back the county mental hospitals but updated so they’re not hell holes and we need to eliminate the stigma people feel when visiting them. Mental health should be seen like any other kind of health.

That’s bleeding heart kook talk but I unironically believe that.

The problem with severe mental illness is that it has a “downward drift” in society.

The most significantly ill become the most poor. There is no one advocating for them because they don’t vote and they don’t have power. We, as a society, only care when one of them rises up and harms someone else.

It reactionary policy and will never work.
