QB Chayil Garnett commits to Auburn (247)
quote:

AUBURN, ALABAMA -- Chayil Garnett raved about Auburn after his first visit there, which took place in late March.

“My family loves the school. I love the school. Family is a main part. I really love Auburn," Garnett said. "It’s a family environment. All schools going to say that, but you can really feel it there. All of the coaches come up and ask you how you’re doing. Little things like that just shows how good of a school it is. I really enjoy everything happening on the academic and athletic side.”

Saturday, Garnett announced he would soon become part of the Auburn family.

A 3-star quarterback from Florida's Lake Wales High, he committed to the Tigers during a visit to Auburn for A-Day weekend. The 6-feet-2, 205-pound Garnett is the No. 21 dual-threat quarterback nationally according to 247Sports. He passed for 2,028 yards (completing 61 percent of his attempts) with 18 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in 2018, while adding 336 rushing yards.

"It's just a great opportunity for me," Garnett said Saturday. "I love the family atmosphere here. And I have a great relationship with the coaches -- all the coaches."

Garnett will be an early enrollee.

Garnett chose Auburn over Duke. Among his other notable offers: UCF, which has had great success at quarterback of late, and Harvard. Garnett is an honor student in Polk County, which is just east of Tampa and is known for being one of the most talent-rich areas in Florida.

First-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kenny Dillingham spearheaded this recruitment for the Tigers. He zeroed in on Garnett not long after arriving at Auburn in December. The Tigers offered Garnett a scholarship after he visited in March and they quickly shot to the top of his leaderboard.

When did Garnett know he wanted to be a Tiger? Right about the time the offer came.

"I kind of knew then," Garnett said. "It's such a big opportunity. I couldn't pass it up."

Garnett is commitment No. 7 for Auburn, which entered the day with the No. 17 recruiting class in the country.

***QUARTERBACK***

COMMITS: 1 -- Chayil Garnett, Lake Wales (Fla.)

SPOTS LEFT: 0-1 -- This is to be determined. If all four scholarship quarterbacks remain on the roster, there's no need to take another. If someone leaves, Auburn potentially could try to add a second quarterback to the class. Our gut says Auburn probably is done here unless two of the scholarship quarterbacks were to leave.

I have no idea how good this Garnett kid is or his family and personal situation, but I find it crazy to turn down a free ride to Harvard for Auburn. I could definitely understand a guy that is “a sure fire” NFL talent wanting to play in SEC, so maybe he thinks he is.
