Are we about to start dying off as a species?

Yes, I know, but that is the basis of an article on Wired.

It postulates that the birth rate will reach its replacement/growth peak soon and then begin to decline.

Their argument is that it will begin an unstoppable decline.

LINK

It is understandable why developed countries have much lower birth rates. When having 5 kids meant there was a decent chance 2 of them would reach adult hood and be able to take care of you then having children was your retirement plan.

Now its flipped to producing fewer off spring with a better chance to do well. Better 1 child (a much lower economic burden) positioned to do very well then 3 who may or may not be able to make ends meet.

So, is the current decline in birth rates we see in Western countries (Japan included) a sign of the inevitable decline of mankind, or is it our population dropping back to a more comfortable equilibrium with the available resources?

Are we dying out or just getting comfy?

Hopefully, we're a bunch of pieces of shite. Hopefully the dogs evolve to take our place. Those good boys and girls deserve it.

I was going to say no, that certain cultural and religious groups aren’t going to fall in the same fertility sink we westerners have, but the Philippines statistic the article brings up is interesting, not that the Philippines is all that different.

Will be interesting to see what happens in Africa, they seem to think Urbanization will drive down rates, we’ll see I guess.

I don’t think we’re going to die off as a species from declining fertility rates but obviously certain countries are going to be ravaged as they already are.

Two major issues.
(1) Decline in birth rate and increase in post career adults at the same time. Where will the money come from (tax base reduction) to pay the way for the retired masses that exceed the working force?
(2) If you pay attention to genetic mutation/flaw rates of the world population, the gene pool is racing (figuratively) toward extinction.

Both are expected to decline significantly, especially when compared to Africa

MORMONISM

Mormons have the answer. They still crap out kids like our ancestors did. 5 children, for them, is a small family group.

The normal Mormon family in Salt Lake City has between 4 and 8 children. Many have between 10-14 or so.

So, the answer to survival is Mormonism. Let's do it. Or, just take away all forms of birth control and let nature take it's course as it used to be.

I don't need a bowl. I free style it with the clippers and my reflection in a beer bottle. Can get some interesting looks if done right

Sure it looks good after a case and a half of Schlitz but then you have up next morning and see it sober.

Earth’s population is rising by one billion people every 12 years. At that rate there will be more than 10 billion people by 2050 and 14 billion by 2100.

The illegal immigration we see in both hemispheres is just a trickle compared to what it will be then. Poor, overpopulated countries will continue to push their poorest towards richer countries. It will be the number one international problem, superseding even climate change and environmental pollution in immediate importance.
