He missed the 93-94 season then came back.

He was probably the closest in that time (I was talking about among todays players), but didn't come close to Gretzkys scoring numbers of 70-90 goals 5 years in a row. Or his assist numbers.

If Wayne Gretkzy scored 0 goals in his entire career he'd still be first all time in NHL points history.

I could not remember how long it was for but knew he dealt with multiple back injuries and cancer. IIRC correctly he was inducted in the NHL Hall of Fame during his 1st retirement and then came back.

And yes I doubt he would have ever caught Gretzky but think he could have gotten the closet barring all the medical issues. I think he is up there in many records probably just behind Gretzky.
