There is absolutely no fing way to know this.

In 2014, both a 1 loss TCU and 1 loss Baylor were not able to compete for the national title

In 2015, a 1 loss OSU who was defending national champion was sitting at home in favor of a 1 loss MSU. An injury to OSU's best player reported after the game was a huge reason why.
In 2016, IMO the only argument was between Washington and PSU, and PSU had 2 losses so I understand it
In 2017, a Bama team who played nobody got in without playing in a CCG game.

There are questions every year. There's no way to know if they got it correct or not. You also can't use game results after the fact to justify opinions one way or the other

I'm not saying they got the results right or wrong, but to make a statement that they unequivocally were correct is just uninformed
