I'm surprised this thread is so long and the opinions so varied.
My thought is: The context counts. The guy is at a university athletic event. He's in public. The girl who posted about it on Facebook was at the game with two close friends, who happened to be black. They (among others nearby) had to listen to this guy. Add to that, he's a scholarship athlete for UGA.
There can be debates about free expression and level of punishment, but it's hard for me to buy into any argument that his behavior could or should be overlooked or warranting a slap on the wrist.
Now maybe I don't understand current 20-year-olds. Maybe in Sasser's mind, what he was saying was somehow funny or harmless. But I'll bet most around him, regardless of age, were embarrassed for him.
As far as the word itself, I happen to think that if he had gotten the attention of the University for yelling any derogatory term that's associated with Field's race, the result would have been the same. For the reasons mentioned.
And yes, if the QB happened to be Hispanic and Sasser was yelling, "Put in the {derogatory term for Hispanics}!", I think the result would have been the same in that situation, too.
I don't think this is a political correctness issue. What organization would tolerate this from someone who is in effect its representative?
