Yo, what the frick did you guys let happen to Finlay Park since I've moved? I know it's been a place for the homeless for a long time now, but what the hell is this?

quote:

The view atop Finlay Park is supposed to be the stuff of postcards — a hill near the Governor’s Mansion overlooking 17 acres of greenspace, water cascading from a spiral fountain into a man-made pond and Columbia’s skyline peaking above canopy trees that offer shade along winding foot paths.

But the public park that the city once promoted as an “oasis in the heart of downtown” more recently to some has become a neglected eyesore. The fountain hasn’t pumped water in years. The trees on the hillside are overgrown, blocking views and causing a daily headache for maintenance crews.

On a typical day, the park is mostly populated by crowds of the homeless. After years of talk about improving the historic park, which predates the Civil War, Columbia officials are now considering spending as much as $30 million. The city could also sell a piece of the park or hand over part of its control to an outside company.

City leaders are requesting submissions from private firms for project ideas through October, signaling the likelihood of at least some form of private development at the park for the first time in its history.

Those submissions are sealed, but a person with knowledge of some of the proposals described them to The Post and Courier.

Its awful. My sister lives in a townhouse right behind the Gov Mansion, and she used to go over there to exercise. Not anymore.

Hell. I’d fix the SOB place up for a lot less than 30,000,000. Why did they let it go to hell like they did. Il tell you. South Carolina is a conservative state but the mayor is a POS libtard. Nuff said.

Its Hobo-central now. No one goes to enjoy it since they decided it is now their headquarters. Sad though, I loved that park.

I was by there the other day. It's a shame what has happened to that park. Every major world class city has a downtown park and we'll need to have ours if we ever want to be taken seriously.

Unfortunately neither the mayor or city council are world class city leaders.

It's a damn shame.

They cod easily contract out to two or three big landscapers and keep that park clean and manicured. What they are not willing to do is provide the law enforcement dedicated to keeping the riff raff out and the park safe and secure. A series of bad happenings there is what led to the current situation.

Hell, they're not willing to fix Five Points and it is a major source of income for the city.

:::::: sighhhhhhhhhh :::::: don't get me started.
