They are so proud of that fact they named a city after it.
I always found it interesting that so many people, even Southerners, are unaware that mobile homes got their name from Mobile, AL. That was the heart of the industry back in the day. Before that, they had names like "trailer home" and the like. It's an interesting but meaningless coincidence that these homes could be moved with relative ease, thus making them -- at least for a short while -- mobile. But when was the last time you saw an established mobile home that you'd call mobile, anyway?
In any event, neither Alabama nor the South in general should be embarrassed about this. The region nursed a major profitable industry and did it so well that the product actually came to contain the name of a Southern city.

Florida has a lot too. A lot of old retirement areas that are trailers make up a large portion of it. Then North Florida...which is basically Alabama.

No it didn't. Mobile homes were named because they are mobile. Mobile (AL) and mobile aren't even pronounced the same.

Do your research and get back to me. I'm correct.
Edit: And, yes, I'm aware they're pronounced differently. The half-century plus that has passed as the name became generic is responsible for that.

A link would be nice. I was born and raised in Daphne and I've never heard that.
They're pronounced differently because they are homophones. Mobile, AL was named after a tribe.

Good Lord, who gives a frick? Doesn’t say anything about Alabama or the people who live in those homes. Does say a lot about you.

There are more mobile homes in Texas than Alabama.

My attempt to do a joke got out of hand. I'm not sure how I was going to finish it, but it wasn't well done. The Snopes entry is fake. It looks convincing but it's deliberately misleading for some reason I'm not entirely clear on.

Mobile homes are an SC thing. Gay a Texas thing. Meth Mizzou. Miss is just dirty poor, Alabama just racist, Tenn all hillbillies
Posted on 9/21/18 at 5:25 pm to Old Sarge
They are called manufactured homes.

It’s like 25% in Mississippi and I think like 40% of kids live at least some time in mobile homes

As far as I know, there is none. It was a badly-executed attempt at an extended joke and the fact that people took it seriously is entirely on me and the fact that I didn't think through where I was going with it. It might have worked IRL with me wearing an excessively innocent expression on my face, but probably not. I do have my dumb moments like everyone else. Mine are just nerdier dumb moments. So feel free to call me an idiot and steal my homework.

No southern state living baw should throw southern stereotypical jokes at other southern states. Out west and up north we are all backwooded, redneck, sister fricking dumbasses with no education or running water.
