We’re not (probably) beating Georgia, and that’s okay. That was never marked as a win.
This team is better than last year. The D laid an egg against Purdue, but it was a win. And it was a win we might not have had last year with the way the game was going. Overall, this team still has 8-10 win potential, and that’s a big upswing. And it should help recruiting, along with the new SEZ going up.
I was not happy and I’m still not happy with the defensive showing against Purdue, but I also take it with a grain of salt. If the refs made correct calls in the first half, this game looks totally different. If a couple passes weren’t dropped, we go to halftime 38-10ish.
Yes, the D gave up tons of passing yards, but they also prepared for and tried to defend a run game that wasn’t put on the field.
We (probably) won’t beat Georgia, but everyone else besides Bama are totally within reach, and they should make for fun games to watch. That’s a much better outlook for this team than it was a year ago.

Other thoughts:
Georgia is tied for last in sacks in the country. The opposition was getting rid of the ball quickly. But SC had 47 pass attempts, and the FCS team has 31. That’s good news.

If Mizzou gets boat raced Saturday the game @USC will be the defining moment of the season. You get boat raced 3 games in a row and all of a sudden you're playing Memphis in survival mode.

Yeah. And if we’re Purdue prepared for our game at SCar, it could be bad. Connor Shaw bad.
That’s the most important game of the year.

I have no idea why you all still think SC is so good.
They're ok.
They ain't boat racing shite

Are you saying they’re worse than Purdue?
If not, what will we do differently against SCar in our second road game of the year to not give up 350+ yds passing?
Are Purdue’s receivers better than Scar’s? (They’re not)
Is Purdue’s QB better than Scar’s? (He’s not)
So I’d expect SCar to put up a good amount of points and yards on us.

I would imagine SC is significantly better than Purdue. Not nearly as good as UGA.

Fair, and we will put up a good amount of points and yards on them.
They are still living of the undeserved preseason hype

The question is what will WIBO due differently to not give up 572 yds passing (and 600+ total yds) to a better team on the road?

I mean, we are all in agreement that that's not how football works right?

Mizzou's defensive passing ranks last 3 years
2016 87th
2017 106th
2018 117th
Maybe he's not capable of doing anything different

We should probably fire him mid season

At this point I'm just perplexed that a DC can't figure out defense.
Pinkel was an offensive guy in the Big 12. I got it.
Odom is a DC guy in the SEC.
Between the MoSt and Purdue games I really just don't get it.

I don't either. It's frustrating for sure.
With this offense we don't even have to be good on defense. Not awful and we can probably win 10 games.
What's most frustrating is we had actually looked pretty good on pass D the first couple games. I understand the competition but we were in position, not blowing coverages etc. then we come out and look like we've never seen the forward pass before.
We've got to start getting more pressure on the QB. That masked deficiencies in the back end for us for a long time.

Why was Mizzou’s defensive ranking in 2015?
What about Memphis in 2013 and 2014?
BO showed that he could be an elite DC. He also has his protégé as the DC. He also has a former NFL DC as an analyst.
The bigger issue with the defense the last few seasons was hiring Cross as DC and the retention of players from the classes starting with the move to the SEC to 2015.
There’s too many freshmen and sophomores that have been forced to play too much too early.

37th to 87th to 106th to 117th.
I'd argue 2015 weren't Barry Odom players and since he took over DC duties in 2015 we've recruited like total arse on defense.
Who is his big defensive signing?
Beckner, Lee, Hall, Garrett are all GP guys.
Who has Barry recruited to replace them?

Garrett is a BO guy. GP didn’t like Garrett and Mizzou didn’t offer until after BO was the HC.
Jordan Elliot is a 4 star that transferred, he’s probably the second best DL on the team.
Byers is another 4 star on the DL.
Hall and Beckner signed signed to play when BO was the DC.
The bigger issue is retention. Mizzou could have had Brady and Howard as senior DEs. They got kicked off the team, and now Mizzou is playing young players that aren’t ready to start yet.

Is it his winning personality?

It’s tough to build through the turmoil.
He’ll figure it out or he won’t.
He still could’ve hired an actual DC last year and he Odomed it.
