Luke is a golden boy.

I don't want to act like I'm some super insider because I'm not, but there is a lot of truth to this. There are a lot of people on campus, particularly those from Mississippi, who love Luke so much that I am not sure will ever give up on him. All I hear whenever I mention that he is clearly not an SEC-level coach is "One of us," and "Player's coach."

Player's coach has always been a demonstrable fallacy. There have been endless college football teams who had coaches they loved to pieces and never won squat. And one need only look at Alabama's dark ages for about a decade pre-Saban to see what an obsession with "One of Us" gets you.

However, I'm not sure that unless there is some pretty sustained pushback that Luke is going anywhere no matter how poorly this season or the next goes.

One of us?

One of us gets you: Kinard, Cooper, Brewer, Freeze, and Luke. Kinard won his 1st year (with Vaught's team) and sucked after that. Otherwise, only 2 won with any regularity (Brewer and Freeze) and they got us put on probation 3 times.

The ones who were not one of us? Sloan (who had won regularly at Vandy and Texas Tech), Dunn (1 yr interim), Tuberville, Cutcliffe, the abortion known as Coach O, and Nutt (that wonderful coach … now he can't sue me for defamation). Can't explain why Sloan sucked so bad, given that he won everywhere but at Ole Miss. Tuberville was fighting the effects of the FNCAA and at least took us to a bowl. Cutcliffe won with Tuberville's players and a once-in-a-generation QB. I won't even begin to discuss the last 2 (Don't sue me, HDN).

So, what's the answer? One of us, when it seems like winning = FNCAA colonoscopies, or outsiders who work out about 50% of the time.
