Hey Gator fans, I don't bring this to rub anything in. It's more of a warning that you will see repeatedly from CTG's defense's. It's almost a staple and while the guy in the film feels like it's because they're bringing in a new scheme it is just a function of Grantham's defense. I saw it when he was coaching at UGA and Louisville and some at MSU but I didn't watch them to much.

His other downside is his defenses can't contain the edge. You folks know all to well about that from watching UF run at will against UGA during his time.

The linked video just talks about a certain play but you'll hear him mention the defense not being lined up and waiting on a call while the O is setting up.

CTG's Defense

I'm sure you guys have already disected everything about that game and probably his defense before the season got started. If Mullen wants to be successful he needs to find another DC soon if they struggle this year.

Great post for the butt sniffer board. Why don't you go over there and post it?

It doesn’t help either when our middle backers aren’t reading guard pulls or high hats. The fits were terrible and they were almost always out of position. We missed David Reese big time. Also missed not having a coach recruit LBs for us the last couple years.

As a DC all you can do is have a player where he needs to be, they have to make the tackle or defend the pass. The latter didnt happen

I'm sure you know there is more to it than that though. And the issue I was trying to bring up was that he didn't have them in place or where they needed to be. You'll see this a ton this year and it will tick you off. It gets better but it never really goes away.

They were in place and missed the tackle all game long. We also got our shite pushed in up front.

UF is soft as Charmin.

What I have a problem with is a 4 2 5 against a run heavy team.

Exactly! 168 yards after missed tackles. Defensive plan wasn't the problem, poor tackling was. Now, I do expect Grantham to get this fixed.

UG fans on the Gator board love to stir the pot. that is why they shouldn't be on this board.

It's not his scheme or planning that I always questioned. It's that he doesn't get his signals in fast enough to get the defense ready for the play. Sometimes it's not in at all and sometimes it's just before the play which gives your player very little time to digest the formation and what might be coming.

Edit: and I'll admit that I didn't watch the whole game or even most of it. I watched while sitting in a bar eating dinner and watching other games so he may not have had this issue as much as he did at UGA and Louisville.

There is a board for UG fans and others to talk about UF football or it's short coming or issues, it is called the SEC Rant.
IMO, as I have expressed multiple times, the Gator board should be for Gator fans to talk Gator sports among themselves. Just the way I feel about it and will continue to have a problem with other fans being allow on this board, because you sure as heck can't join their boards, not that I would want to!

I don't mind the defense because I enjoy unique blitzing and faster players.

The problem on Saturday wasn't due to scheme, though, many times the players were in the right position but didn't understand what their assignments were/started to panic.

I think the problem, more likely than anything, is that this defense has struggled with mobile quarterbacks for ten years. Yes, I know, Snell rushed for a lot of yards, however:

We had a lot of drives dead in the water if we would have simply tackled their Quarterback and stopped him from scrambling free. Those missed tackles and extended drives probably hurt our defensive mindset.

However, big however, they did their job in the 4th quarter and in the red zone. They caused two turnovers and held the other team twice to a 3 and out and a one first down drive when they were most tired.

I think this defense, though, would have been better suited for next year, and of course -- you have to blitz. For whatever reason, we didn't really blitz last game, and worse off we didn't bring unique pressure that we had seen from the CHSU game.

It was a bizarre game all around on defense and offense.

Offense: Franks touches the ball more than any player, throws the most in his career for...no apparent reason. Run game is never established.

Defense: Known for blitzing, barely blitzes at all. Even in three deep coverage they seemed to have their zones too short and got beaten deep.

I'm giving hope that this is an anomaly, but I feel like we're going to have a very long year if our offense can't score more than 16 points every game.

That's been another staple of his so I'm not sure if this will improve although he did grow at MSU last year.

He does love to blitz so you're in for a treat. And he will bring his NFL style blitzes.

And I'll say this as well. No matter who was brought in to run the offense or defense, it's going to take a full year for the team to be comfortable with them. Year two will see some major improvements.

That was what was so weird about the Kentucky game, we didn't really blitz that often. We tried to get to him with the normal 3 or 4 man rush without ever really sending the house.

Losing Wilson in the first Quarter didn't help, though. He is a fantastic corner and we had to readjust to helping a true freshman CB cover for him.

That being said:

I'm not nearly as far in panic mode about the defense as other people, although I enjoy this defense (as previously stated) more than others.

I am far more worried about our QB decision-making/trying to find a working offense. The defense is just a patience game, the offense is a "oh frick we're not going to score points in years" game, unless Emory/Jalon come in next year and shock everyone.

No reason to be in panic mode at all for defense. It's just something that will frustrate the heck out of you with all of the "palms up" plays where the D is looking for the call.

Yep, and that much I expected.

I wasn't too frustrated by this game, but I get why Florida fans are salty. Appreciate the content.

Why, they must have poor administrators on their board?

Why would you want to be on their board? Gonna talk some leg humping, butt sniffing, football with the ankle biters?
