Rewatched the UT Martin game today

And I’m wondering if anyone else thinks the players were told to hold back?
The play calling on both sides of the ball was certainly vanilla.
I know the run game numbers are somewhat a result of running the ball on obvious passing situations. And as a whole, the D did okay considering how fast the opposing QB got rid of the ball.
That said, the lines didn’t seem very aggressive after the first quarter or so.
Any chance the players were told to play at 80%?
I’m not quite sure how playing an FCS team is coached. Anyone here worry going into sec play about the Dline penetration or oline run blocking other than what I’ve read?
I guess my point is that I didn’t get much from the game, but figured the lines would have made a little more impact than they did. Is that a fair assessment?

Why would the staff show more of their playbook than necessary in this game?
Obviously play calling would be vanilla.
They likely played within intelligent parameters to mitigate injury risks once the score was broken open.
I think there are multiple reasons to have mild concern about the OL as we transition slightly to a less frantic pace and more traditional formations.
We certainly don't have the edge-rushers we've had in the past. It'll be a different type of DL, one more focused on being elite on the interior and I think we'll see more LBs shooting through.

Yes, it was extremely vanilla. Will most likely be the same this week as long as those play calls work. If not, they'll have to open up the playbook a little bit more against the better competition on Saturday.

I watched it too and I noticed that the tackling was still not good and especially the secondary. I thought that UTM was even more physical, but Mizzou did enough to rout them.

The playbook was obviously vanilla, and for good reason. I just figured there would be more penetration from the Dline against an fcs team.
I’m not concerned at this point. I was just wondering if anyone thought they weren’t playing 100% within their set.
I know the ends aren’t what we’re used to, and that’s an area of concern. But it’s hard to judge that position when the QB gets rid of the ball in 0.8 seconds.

No way would the players be told to hold back. In fact, if you hold back, you're more likely to get hurt. That type of soft, lackadaisical play is why the defense allowed 43 to Missouri State last year

His isn’t the Stec defense that will be able to put consistent pressure with just the front 4. It will have to be more like the defenses that BO used at Memphis. At Memphis BO was able to get consistent pressure by mixing coverages and blitzes.
That will have to be the way this defense gets pressure, at least until the ends become more consistent. They are obviously the weakest part of the defense going into the season.

Makes sense. I just didn’t quite know what I was seeing. They seemed to get penetration in the second half last year. I kinda expected them to be hungry for it in the first game this year. So I wasn’t sure if it was due to play calling or if they were just holding back. Because I would think this line (at least the interior) would be able to gut an FCS O line. Since it wasn’t obvious to me, I wanted to know what y’all were seeing that I didn’t get.

Just to be clear, I was nothing more than a casual fan until about 5-6 years ago, regarding any football. So, when I’m asking it’s more so because I don’t know and genuinely want input. Not because I’m questioning the capabilities of the players or coaches. I’m still learning a lot about the game.

UTM definitely ran an offense predicated on getting rid of the ball quickly. Mizzou is also going to have to use stunts and blitzes to get pressure on offenses. Mizzou didn’t do hardly any of that.

Thanks, that helps. I’m sure we’ll see more tomorrow and will see a lot more vs Purdue. I think that game will be all out as it will set the tone for the year
