With football season approaching, just want to step back for a minute and voice what I love about being a gamecock.

I think we are a unique bunch and we have our own little club.

With us you don't see many fans of us who don't have some connection.

Unlike that of say Bama or Notre Dame with tons of fans who jump on because of the success.

It's something that when living outside of the state you take a little pride in because it's so mysterious to everyone outside the state that they love to ask questions and hear stories.

And then when we do win you fee like it's a badge of honor because you were with them during the tough times.

(I thought of this while discussing with someone why they are a Yankees fan, guy grew up in Charleston and said "Growing up I loved watching Jeter etc"---so basically he was a front runner that took the team because they won all the time)

I'll probably add more to this in about a few hours when I'm at happy hour and more colleagues start asking me about college football season.

Very valid points.

We are absolutely an exclusive club. The things this fanbase have endured and the unfailing loyalty we always demonstrate are unmatched in my opinion.

It’s not just us, but it’s very few in the SEC.

We could have went the route of Kentucky or Vandy and not care, but we do.

I like to compare us with Ole Miss and Miss State too.
You ain’t finding very many random arse fans pulling for them.
And when you find them outside of Mississippi you get excited.

I don’t know how to judge it outside of the conference unfortunately but for example
The bigger programs in the Big Ten like PSU, Michigan or OSU are filled with fans with literally no connection.

“Hey I’m Joe from Greenwich, die hard Osu fan”
Oh you from Ohio or went there? Nope

Speaking of Kentucky I saw the very first vehicle I've ever seen in Aiken or Augusta with a Wildcat tag on it yesterday. Kinda did a double take.

Sadly probably a gamecock fan for football, and since we have a very low following for basketball a Kentucky fan during that season?
Idk when i was in school we stunk in basketball (we’ll actually we always have but the final 4 year) and everyone were fricking UNC or duke fans during basketball season

That is surprising

I know many UK fans that have called Aiken a 2nd home for 100 years or so.

Where there are horses you usually also find Cats

I know exactly who it is. He was my doctor growing up. He went to UK College of Medicine and retired several years ago.

Dr. John Baxley.

Really good guy. I need to go by and check up on him at the golf course he’s a member at one Saturday morning.

It amazes me sometimes how so many Gamecocks on here know someone that someone else saw/knows. And there really aren't all that many of us on here. I guess I should also add Lew to the list. Seems some of my distant relatives are related to some of his wife's distant relatives. I use the fam card to stay out of banland.

It’s really not amazing at all.
Most of us all live in the same area.

As I’ve said, it’s not a huge fan base, and that’s why it’s unique and makes me feel more at home

I agree with this 100 percent.

What was cool was when I went to visit New York, I went to this place called “The Mason Jar” to watch a gamecock baseball game. Its a gamecock bar that had all sorts of jerseys, helmets, flags everywhere. The other patrons had gamecock gear on, and the bartender grew up a gamecock fan and we talked about the cocks for a while. I didn’t really like New York City, but it was cool to find a little slice of home when you’re so far away.

The place still had like 10 dollar beers though, so frick New York for that as well.

Mason Jar is fricking awesome.

they have buckets of 5 for 25 bucks during games. (Assuming this is just football)

That’s a steal IMO.

The city is great come football season. Literally every major P5 school has a bar.

Yea I remember thinking about how badass that place would be for football games. It would be just like being in the vista. except you leave with a very light wallet.

5 for 25 isnt bad for up there though. I couldnt find a single thing in Manhatten cheaper than 8 bucks. and that was like bud light.

Yea but you gotta remember it’s a sliding scale.

You make more up here so it’s easier to afford the prices
