Downsizing venues instead of downsizing prices for the masses

Eventually venues will seat 1,000 but they will be for corporations and billionaires only. Welcome to the decline and fall of college sports.
By the time the presidents and AD's figure it out, the die will already have been cast.

Well, our new 102.5K seat almost-always-filled stadium while also having probably the wealthiest alumni base in the SEC says you're wrong.

I see nothing wrong with keeping demand ahead of supply. It’s worked out well at State. It keeps the riff-raff off our campus. It always amazes me the sidewalk tide fans I know always get tickets to the OOC games for Bama. “Rawl Tahd! Beat NorthwesternState!”

Everyone is decreasing size, and the average fan is being priced out of attending games. I'm fine with it, I don't go anymore anyway regularly. When they start charging to watch on TV I'll be sad.

The difference is the TV fan is less loyal than the live fan.
You and I are the old guard. When the Baby Boomers dry up, attendance will crash as the next generation is less engaged and less willing to attend a game AND donate to the universities.

I had UT season tickets for many years....made that 720 mile round trip many a weekends over a many of years....In 1994 my son started playing DII football for 4 years and I gave up my season tickets to follow him for 4 years with the intention to start my season tickets back when my son graduated....I found out over those 4 years it was a lot easier to keep my arse at home and watch UT play on TV and I've never looked back...With every game on TV I don't miss the drive...the money spent...the traffic etc...and I get to watch other games from Noon to midnight too.

I am not sure that it will come to 1,000 seat arenas but I have a VR and there is an app called NextVR that gives you a looks at the future. It has live game highlights and it's a side line....end zone....side court view of sporting events from the NBA and the NFL and others. The games will eventually be broadcast on VR headsets and that is not a 50 yard line ticket. It's a sideline pass. I have actually moved to get out of the way before my brain said...It's VR not reality...lol...that's your future for sporting events.

Stadium wasn't even filled for the Alabama game last year.

Trend lines are showing a recent decline in attendance. Students/millenials are a concern down the road.. Will they support better as alumni?
SEC programs have less risk I would imagine, less NFL factor and a history of rabid interest in their favor.
Bigger may not be better in the long game.

The attendance decline will accelerate as technology to watch at home gets better and better and the dumb asses in charge keep raising prices for tickets. I've seen my share of game and I'll go when it's convenient, but I gave up my season tickets + "donation" when I realized it was costing me the price of a weekend vacation to go watch us pound Western Carolina...in 95 degree heat at 11AM! These days I can watch any game I want in the comfort of my living room with anything I want to eat or drink, watch several games on the side, not have to worry about parking, or getting stuck in traffic if I don't leave before it's over. The experience at home is rivaling the one at the stadium and is much less expensive.

There are already private venues and private games for the very wealthy and powerful.
There may very well be though, in the near future, a downturn in stadium sizes. Michigan and Tennessee could both stand to downsize to 100k, spread the seats out and make their places better to watch a game. Neither place has beem really sold out, well, really full ... in a long long time.
Clemson recently reduced capacity to make space for more luxury seating.
A&M may one day be able to fill their new palace to capacity because The South is growing in population ... bit none of the other programs should waste money on expansion any time soon.
We're nearing critical mass in a sense, the proverbial expanding bubble that will eventually burst.

I think we were the only ones to play Northwestern State. Along with Alcorn State and Jackson State. Not sure I would want to throw stones.
