I see 7-5 as the ceiling. There are very few if only maybe a couple of experienced athletes on that defense.
I mean, come on, Taylor Polk got significant playing time last season. And I know people like to celebrate his Rudy-esque contribution as a walk-on, but the fact that his crazy-waving arms was on the field the majority of the time speaks volumes about the athleticism of that defense.

starting corners - Webster 4 years, Jones 2 years
starting safeties - Woods 3 years, Moore 3 years,
starting DEs - Evans 3 years, Robinson 2 years
starting DT - Jones 2 years, Coatney 1 year JR TR
Starting star LB - Hartsfield 2 years, or Dasher RS- junior
Starting LBs- Bing-Dukes 2 years, Hibbler 2 years
back up corners - Julius 2 years, Hamilton 1 year
back up safeties- White RS Fr, Miller 1 year
Back up DEs - Shepard 1 year, Anderson 1 year
back up DTs- Donnelly 3 years, David RS FR
back up star LBs - Ordway 3 years, Custis 2 years both can play corner or safety also.
back up LBs- Evans 1 year, Baker RS FR, Clarke RS FR, Sanogo 1 year
There is plenty of experience on the defensive side of the ball. There just needs to be better in game coaching of the talent.
If we still had our LB coach who is now the head coach at Indiana, he would have this defense back in the top 10 in the country. He made Denzel a FR all-american. His in game play calling put players in position to make plays behind the line of scrimmage not 8 yards down field.
As for the ceiling for this team. They were in reach of 3 games that would have made them 9-3. A bad exchange between Ta'amu and Swinney in the Arky game. An interception in the aTm game. And if they had run the ball more and stopped Shae from running around so confused by the Cal defense they could have pulled off that game. Even with A.J. out the 2nd half.
TT is no better than Cal was last season.
aTm may be better.
Arky isn't going to be that good at all this year. Plus we play them in LR where we actually have a winning record against them.
I think SC at home we have a better than average chance.
I think LSU is going to be vulnerable. Only 3 returning offensive starters and a new OC.
We get Bama, Auburn and State at home. So the highest ranked teams we play, we get a chance at them at home.
Now next season the defense gets a lot less experienced, but not necessarily worse.
Lets hope some of those RS FR are starting by the end of the season.
