kind of like how Bama doesn't deserve 2017? if you can't even win your conference division you have no right to play at a national level.

So tell me this. Let's say we lose 1 game and lose to South Carolina. South Carolina loses two OOC games and wins the East. They play in the SEC Championship game and get beat by an undefeated West team. The committee offers us a chance to go to the playoffs since we only lost 1 game, and all the other conference winners lost 2 games.
Do we go to the playoffs? Do we deserve to go to the playoffs? Should we just turn it down since we didn't win our conference?

That argument was stronger in the BCS model, where UA truly snuck in. Expanding to 4 teams allows for wild card teams that simply play in tougher divisions. They still had to play into the finals and win... which they did.
