How prevelant is misdiagnosis of mental illness that is not mental illness but rather a result of poor lifestyle choices (too much drinking, no exercise, etc.)?

I would say >75% of the patients I see could be out of therapy and off medication if they really committed to it. I am talking strict diet, daily exercise, spiritual growth, personal responsibility in relationships, and stopping alcohol/drugs.

I am not saying alcohol, etc is inherently bad. They are just terrible for you if you are struggling with mental health issues.

The high misdiagnosis rate is due to two phenomena:
1. Greed by big pharma.
2. Strong desire on the part of people who would rather have a diagnosis than begin to change themselves.

My favorite appointments are my LAST appointments with patients. I love seeing them well and off medication. The look on their face at that moment is what gets me excited about work on Monday.

Have you ever encountered demonic possession or claimed demonic possession in any patients?

Do you, from a psychiatric standpoint, believe in demonic possession?
