As I'm basking in the glow of our current recruiting run, I couldn't help but start to think what turned things around. Muschamp was not a wildly popular hire, though I was happy with it and wanted him hired as DC and HCIW the previous year. The program had come off the rails and things were pretty bleak. Things could have gone bad quick for him.

I think we'll look back when all is said and done and point to Muschamp having the courage and guts to take the redshirt off Bentley halfway through his freshman year and playing him. Bentley turned that season around and helped start our positive momentum. I don't think Muschamp would have pulled the trigger in Florida on that, and I think it shows how much growth he's had as a coach. I think we have our long term guy, and I think he's going to be very successful for years.

Sort of piggy backing off of that, but I think two of his most important decisions were to hire Bobby Bentley and Clyde Wrenn. Our former staff had burned some bridges, and we needed some guys to rebuild those in-State.

Tireless work ethic.
Redshirt off of Bentley.
Firing Roper, promoting BMac and hiring Werner.
Having a vision and a plan.
Hiring Mike Peterson.
Getting Wolford back in the fold.
Endearing himself to the community.
Building a strong PR presence and hiring the right support staff.
Accepting nothing less than excellence amd demanding it not just from his players, but his staff as well.
Shying away from the limelight and TV time.
Buying-in to our love for our program.
Winning with young guys ... too many to mention.

He's doing all the right things.

Yep. He's drawing up a perfect blueprint on how to rebuild a team.

I admit, I called him Moosechimp and thought y'all had made a terrible decision when you folks hired him but he's done a very solid job there. I'd much rather have had Muschamp then Bielema the last few years let me tell you.

Champ’s most important decision since he’s been here was who he would hire as OC when he got hired and he failed.

I questioned the Roper hire when Champ made it but figured “Roper must be good if Muschamp is hiring him again”. Then, after the most embarrassing loss in my lifetime to Clem (and I’m not young) in 2016, I did a deep dive on researching Roper and concluded there was NOTHING in his past that would lead anyone to believe he would ever be more than an average OC.

Now, an average offense and a great defense can win us a bunch of games here, as Spurrier proved, but when I say “average” for Roper, I mean that would be the absolute best that guy could ever be and that’s after a few years of recruiting elite talent. With the talent we had, Roper was simply gawd-awful.

Roper was gawd-awful at Florida and he was gawd-awful for 2 years here. Roper got canned with Muschamp at UF and the best job he could get was a quality control job with the worst team in the NFL. Mark Richt interviewed him for a UGA job and passed. Roper’s entire resume was a couple of decent offenses at Duke working under qb coaching legend Cutcliffe, and then 3 seasons of failure out on his own.

So, I say all that to say that Muschamp’s second biggest decision was firing Roper and making a new OC hire. I believe he’s gotten it right now. I REALLY like the BMac hire with the Werner assist.

Look at the second half of the bowl game. It took BMac a half of game to get his feet wet but then the second half the offense exploded for about 230 yards.....and remember this was against a Top 5 in the country defense!

Allow that BMac and the offense had to take the first half to get comfortable during the bowl game, and then imagine if the offense can do that for two halves in 2018. That equates to about 460 yards per game.....that is a top 20 in the country offense!

We don’t need a top 20 offense to be really good, we can be really good with a top 50 offense....and I think that is our floor in 2018. Look at 2017. That team won 8 regular season games with a horrid offense ranked 100+ in the country. Just make last year’s offense a top 50 offense and the UK and TAMU games are wins. That is a 10 win season in Muschamp’s second year! That is tying the Dawgs for SEC East champs and then getting the nod because is the tiebreaker. Amazing!

Anyway, back to the OP’s question....Muschamp failed with his most important decision since being hired but he appears to have corrected the failure. It’s possible, Roper was the best Muschamp could do at the time (not many OC’s in demand would take the risk with a recently fired guy from an elite program), and in the long run the Roper hiring, firing and then hiring of BMac/Werner will turn out to be for the best. It’s possible the Roper hire was just something we had to endure for 2 years to get what we have now.

I really think it’s gonna be a special and fun season, and I haven’t felt this way since Shaw’s senior year.....what was that, 5 years ago? We’re due guys.
