Those Colts teams had a lot of talent passing through, but they could never stay healthy for long periods of time. When Jones was there, he had Lydell Mitchell as his running back who was pretty good and was all purpose, he could run all over you and he was a good receiver. The Colts had the bad fortune to be good at the same time the Raiders and Steelers were ascendant and their defense could be suspect at times, but the offense at least through 1977 was really good

You could make the valid argument that Bert Jones' 1976 MVP season was the greatest passing season of all-time especially when you consider the context in which it occurred and how the 1970s were basically the dead ball era of NFL passing pre-Mel Blount Rule
