In fairness there are very few undefeated seasons by anybody in CFB anymore. And there are still Conference Bowl tie-ins and polls still play a huge part. Let's not forget that most of Saban's National Championship happened under before the playoffs began.

But two of those NCs were a result of losing at home in November. Under the old system you did get a mulligan after those types of loses. FSU would lose to Miami in early Oct and be out of the race.
