How in the hell has Bama not had a #1 overall choice in the NFL draft since 1948?

Good thread topic, I don't understand why it is not more popular. I don't think it is that odd for Bama to only have one, and is a reflection on nfl teams more so than Bama. I have read up on Gilmer he may very well be the best Bama player for the time he played in, but I digress. Number one picks tend to be picked on needs more so than talent. Granted all number one picks should have talent, but a last place team usually needs a qb(among other things). Looking back I bet we can find a case where just about every sec team had the best player in the draft but was not picked first because the team with the first pick had a greater need. Has Bama ever had the best the qb in the country? Not that I remember.

I don't know why this post is getting down voted. Kind of interesting, even if it doesn't mean much.

Well, Broadway Joe did go #1 in the 1965 AFL Draft. He went much lower (12th) in the 1st round of the NFL Draft, but ol' Joe was making ut clear that he was going to insist on a lot of money (for back then) so some of the teams nearer the top may have been scared away from him.
