Depends on how much money they "donate" to get players.
But seriously, if the players don't see the fans supporting them it hurts their excitement about playing and their confidence. Those things are right behind talent on what separates good from average players. You can take the most talented player in the world and if he isn't into the game and confident then he isn't going to do much.
