Former Alabama QB Vince Sutton passes away Thursday (BamaOnLine)
quote:
Former Alabama quarterback Vince Sutton passed away Thursday morning.
The former Crimson Tide signal caller had been dealing with a number of health issues in recent years, including kidney disease and a pair of strokes that led to partial blindness.
After his playing days at Alabama in 1980s, Sutton’s name resurfaced during the Tide’s 2016 season. Jalen Hurts became UA’s starting quarterback as a true freshman, making him the first player to accomplish that feat in 32 seasons. The last was Sutton.
The LaGrange (Ga.) High School product started five games behind center for Alabama in 1984 and ended his playing career with 1,102 passing yards and 10 touchdowns (1984-88).

Hate to hear that. Sutton was a shining example of dedication. New guys kept edging him out for the starting job and he just kept busting his arse to be ready when he got a shot to play.

Sorry to hear...heard he'd been on the kidney transplant list for a long time...
I'll always remember him for our '88 game at Kentucky; I remember watching that game on TV. Sutton was a 5th year senior and the third string QB that year. David Smith got injured the first game of the year and Dunn started against UK...
We were down 17-0 at halftime...Sutton replaced Dunn early in the third quarter and brought us back...late in the 4th quarter we were down 27-17 when UK fumbled in their territory and Sutton capitalized with a short TD pass...
We got the ball back in the waning minutes of the game, inside our 20 I think, down 27-24...Sutton accounted for every yard in that drive. He had a long run to convert one fourth down setting up the game winner. On 4th and goal at the UK 3, he completed a play action pass to the tight end to win it...it was a great moment for him and prevented what would've been an embarrassing loss to UK...
Rest in peace, Mr. Sutton...

Rip Vince. I wasn't born yet when you played but I appreciate what you did to help desegregate the game.
