1. How bad is SMU?
Through Week 9, SMU had scored 39 points while allowing an average of 49.2 points per game. However, the Mustangs busted out for a whopping 10 points against Memphis while only allowing 48, so their season total is now better than their average opponent's single game.
SMU has the worst scoring offense in the country, averaging just 7 points per game. The team in second-to-last place, Eastern Michigan, averages more than twice as many, 14.3.
SMU has the worst scoring defense in the country, allowing 48 points per game. The second-worst, Georgia State, averages 43.67 points.
If SMU got a win for scoring half as many points as its opponent, it'd be 1-6.
Baylor averages 50.4 points per game, more than SMU's season total. You might point out that this is skewed by the Bears' Week 1 matchup against the Mustangs, but it actually isn't. Baylor called off the dogs after going up 31-0 in the first half, winning 45-0 and scoring below its season average.
SMU's opponents have more scored more points on PATs than SMU has scored points on touchdowns and PATs combined. SMU has scored 34 points on touchdowns (one TD ended the North Texas game, making it 43-6, and ... I guess everybody just decided not to kick the PAT). It's allowed 40 touchdowns, with opponents going 39/40 on PATs.
SMU's average play is 3.6 yards. Its opponents' average play goes for 7.1 yards, almost twice as long.
SMU averages 249.4 yards per game and gives up an average of 553.6, more than twice as many yards.
Maybe you're the type who eschews scoring offense and scoring defense as outdated stats. Well, advanced stats don't bail SMU out much. They are dead last in offensive F/+ and 121st in defensive F/+. They are dead last in offensive S+P and 127th in defensive S+P.

I wonder how much he sold the "I'll get Venables to be DC" to our PTB?

Well our guys talked to Venables, but apparently it wasn't for the HC job.

Well, June Jones couldn't win there and he is one of the best offensive coaches I've ever seen.
At Hawaii he had a QB that threw for like 17,000 yards for his career. Don't remember the exact numbers, but I don't think that record will ever be broken.
Most Jones ever won there was 7 I think.

But he did take them to four bowls in a row. Has that been done at SMU since the sanctions? They were only two years remmoved from that bowl streak when Morris was hired.
I'm not at all sold on the guy, but we'll see. Lot's of other places have made underwhelming hires that seem to turn out alright. I'm not going to be completely against him right from the outset. We wanted rid of Bielema, well, here we go. We're going a completely different direction with this thing.
Has he done a presser yet? I'm interested in seeing how recruits respond and how we can salvage this godawful class.

My only concern at this point with Morris is if he gets enough time from the fanbase. I let the science nerd stuff go for now because he is now our coach and I wanna support him. But I had mentioned earlier today I think(last night? Hell I don't remember), that if we make another 180° shift in philosophy, which we have now done, we may be looking at another rebuild situation.
That being said, I think Morris may make a bowl next year, but it will be tough. I hope our fans have enough patience left in them to hold judgment til at least year 3.
ETA: dunno on the presser. I've been out of pocket all night.

I agree, I think he's going to start us completely from scratch and that alone is going to make him lose a portion of the fan base - a fan base that is already impatient and halfway in "man, frick this bs" mode. I'm just hoping we don't have another winless or 1–7 SEC season. I know we're bad off, but that can't become a habit.
I'm going to be open minded and hope for the best. He deserves a fair four or five years (barring a complete and utter W/L meltdown), and we'll know what we're dealing with before too long.

I’m guessing not at all. He’s a smart man. Hunter is a smart man. Neither would think that is remotely possible. So yeah, I’d guess that wasn’t a part of the decision at all.

Without Morris 2008 4-3 2009 9-5 2010 6-7 2015 14-1 2016 14-1 2017 12-1
59-18
If you take out the years Chad Morris was at SMU 2015-2017
19-15
With MOrris 2011 10-4 2012 11-2 2013 11-2 2014 10-3
42-11
Look deeper into it than just the record... here are his Sagarin rating. SMU was in the 200’s when he took that job. It was the worst D1 school as far as rankings. His current team is 136 points better than the one he took over.

This is why Morris' tenure at SMU is more impressive than Norvell's at Memphis.

Not to mention Clemson before they hired him and what they did after installing his offense.
Fuente won 10 and 9 games before Norvell.
Plus the off the field stuff with Norvall is concerning.
It's a great hire. Is it a lock for success? No, but what is at this point?

Our talent on roster should get us to a bowl next year.
If we don't make a bowl I'll really worry about Morris ability to utilize talent
