What's the significance? Is there some Tom Rinaldi back story?

An SEC school electing a black homecoming queen doesn't happen all the time. She's from a podunk town and really isn't the pedigree for SEC Homecoming Queen (usually goes to well connected sorority girls) Plus, she's one of the best women's basketball players in the country a team that lost the national championship game and returns 4 starters.

From a PR standpoint, MSU looks really good here. State will be preseason top three and has a lot of nationally televised games this year, and every time you'll see a feature on the star player, a poor black girl from Mississippi, being the homecoming queen. All while Ole Miss is licking their wounds from the NCAA hammer dropping.

A&M has never elected a black girl, let alone a girl as homecoming queen.

So is this the football fan equivalent of having a black friend?

Alabama has been electing black homecoming queens since the 70's.

I imagine it doesn't take many votes to win.
