Tennessee has a much harder time pulling kids out of the Carolinas and Virginias than they used to. Their ability to recruit to the east and south has been hampered by some resurgence by surrounding schools. This started when Fulmer was there, and never has returned.
This may be true but I'd like to know why the recruiting sites rankings don't seem to reflect it?
Butch is bad at a lot of things but I don't think anyone can argue with 4 top 10 classes in 5 years

Anyone saying a lack of in state talent is holding Tennessee back as a program in terms of outside perception is a dunce. What was traditionally an unfertile recruiting ground is quickly making a name for itself over the last 5-7 years.
There's currently 20 4* in-state composites in the 2019 class. That's more than every other state in the SEC not named Georgia, Florida, or Texas.
Like it or not for other fan bases, in state recruiting is turning into a big positive for UT (largely thanks to the Nashville metro) and a selling point for potential coaches and staff.
It's time to get someone who can both capitalize on recruiting and is capabable of competent coaching.

2017 - 5th place in SEC recruiting
2016 - 7th place in SEC recruiting
2015 - 2nd place in SEC recruiting
2014 - 5th place in SEC recruiting
2013 - 10th place in SEC recruiting
With classes like that you ain't winning the conference.
