The biggest difference between Smarts teams and the teams of the CMR era are a noticeable difference in slowing down speedy QB's and the team reads screens as well as any team I have ever watched. I watched 3 of our players on the one screen MSU threw immediately recognize and back off the rush and look for the target yesterday. It was a thing of beauty. We still made a lot of boneheaded mistakes last year/penalties that all teams make but defensively we look better than I can remember. That being said, Mark Richts offense was deadly most years.
