Last year NCST DL alone averaged 2 sacks a game. our OL with Bentley in gave up on average almost 4 sacks a game.
During the game on saturday, we got more sacks rushing just 3 guys than their DL did on the day. Let that sink in on both how that speaks to improvement on our DL as well as OL
EDIT: to put that in context, that vaunted DL that we heard about all off season got 0 freaking sacks

11 TFL and 4 sacks against an offense that's designed to play up-tempo and get rid of the FB quickly. It was a style of play that East Carolina had under Ruffin Mcneil. We played those teams with some of the best DLs our program ever had, and we didn't get many TFL and sacks in those games.
Hopefully it is a sign that our defense will be improved this season in pressuring opposing offenses....
Also props to our much-beleaguered OL for holding NC St. to only 2 sacks and 7 TFL. Keep improving...

The TFL total really gets me. I've seen mixed figures on our tally from last season...but to get that many after one game against a plus offense that runs a quick strike offense is pretty damn impressive.

This was the most impressive aspect of our win Saturday imho. Let's just hope we keep improving. Typically the biggest improvement of the season comes from the first to the second game.

So I went back and watched our game again. If you're wanting to get a big woody about what our defense can look like, watch that 3rd quarter again. State netted 0 yards almost all quarter and didn't get their lone touchdown drive started until the beginning of the 4th.
Not only that, pay special attention to the DL play. Especially on the Kier Thomas sack. I can't remember the last time EVERY one on the DL beat their man. BAW and wonnum are on the outside and immediately get by their man as does Sawyer on the inside. As finley moves up in the pocket Kier beats the double team and brings him down. We were getting there with 4 for the first time in a long time and with DL like Wonnum who played 90 snaps.
