He was hoping that Wade would struggle more.

Wade is doing better than expected/ about as good as one could given the timing of the hire + situation.

What Wade has done though is capitalized on unusual circumstances + instate talent rather than elite recruiting though. Unless you plan to recruit in the margins permanently, Wade still has much to prove

I mean, just look at the context of these LSU guys that is clearly left out

2018 5 star Smart (+Reid)

Smart is a 4* but still consensus top ~30 which is a huge pull. The thing though is he is an instate LA kid.

This is similar to how Auburn lucked into Mustapha Heron. By the time Jamie Dixon left Pitt, Heron had limited options available as teams filled up their classes already

Credit for getting him, but beating out a down for the count UConn program + GTown who already lost him isn't that big

A 3* who Wade already had committed to VCU?

Bigby-Williams

Did he even have any other major offers? Obviously a huge talent addition but Wade won by showing up

Combs/Onwuasor/Daryl Edwards

None of these guys had legit offers from big time programs. Solid additions for sure but not huge pulls

Reid

A 5* player has a GF at LSU?

I don't give Bruce Pearl full credit for EJ Montgomery either btw. EJ's sister plays for AU, that is dumb luck not great recruiting
