Chickens will eat pebbles too. He could definitely do it for cheaper that $1.25/day. The pebble trick has been used by chicken farmers for decades to make their birds weigh more the day if slaughter.

Most birds do. They don't have teeth. The stones go into their gizzard to break down food and thus aid in digestion.
