Interesting Alabama squad that year. 6 of their 7 wins they gave up less than 10 points on defense. In fact, of those 6 wins, they gave up 29 points total. They gave up 28 alone to a Vandy squad they beat by 21. Of those 7 wins, they gave up an average of 8.14 points on defense.

Their 4 regular season losses were by a combined 17 points which is an average of 4.25 points. Of those games, their average scoring was 13.25 and giving up 17.5.

Of the 4 regular season losses, the first 3 were by a combined 8 points. Their "worst" loss was an 0-9 loss to Penn State.

Of course, their worst loss of the season happened to be against one of Louisville's best teams of all time in the Fiesta Bowl; a UL squad that went 10-1-1 lead by former Miami national champion coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Not counting the Fiesta Bowl loss, that Alabama team sure looked better than a 7-4 regular season squad considering how all the games were relatively close, especially the losses.

It was also Stallings first year.

That was the homecoming game my freshman year. It was an ugly game that I watched through the blurry lens of Southern Comfort.
