Especially if the perpetrator is prominent and well connected, the victim then has to face the denials of the perpetrator who will be at least initially supported by the administration, not to mention other students who are likely to be unsupportive and even hostile. The internet can be an extremely hostile environment for young folks. Unless the victim, remember these are high schoolers, has a lot of inner strength, proceeding to press charges is daunting and a very stressful challenge. Many victims will simply choose to try to go on with their lives rather than press charges.

...it would take a lot of courage for the victim and her family to expose this type of predator. I can't even imagine how devastating it would be to have my daughter suffer that way.

That being said, I don't know that I or my family could live with the possiblily that our failure to report might result in more victims.
