The infractions were very different. The PSU football program was otherwise squeaky clean. Paterno was not violating recruiting rules or anything else operationally. No violations. The NCAA really overreached in terms of what they did. They inserted themselves into a criminal investigation involving an incident that its core was not football related. Sandusky had been long gone from the program and his crimes did not involve anything with the football program....other than his access to the facilities which Paterno had no control over. I'm not excusing Paterno's inaction, but this was a criminal matter that did not involve anything with the players on the team or any recruits

Ole Miss is vastly different....it's much closer to what SMU did and the whole Logan Young thing. There are real allegations if not proof of recruiting violations and "paying" some players.

Penn State is far from squeaky clean. The do have a following like Bama and Tennessee that are borderline cultish which makes it terribly difficult to hammer them for anything.
