LSU was and is the "Fighting Tigers"
True. It's a much-forgotten fact that USCe is also the "Fighting" Gamecocks. Let's look at the SEC's "official" mascots and secondary mascots:
A&M Aggies/(no secondary mascot but have a live collie dog)
Arkansas Razorbacks/Hogs
Auburn Tigers/Plainsmen (also have a live golden eagle)
Bama Crimson Tide/Red Elephants
Carolina Fighting Gamecocks/Cocks
Florida Gators/(no secondary mascot)
Kentucky Wildcats/(no secondary mascot)
LSU Fighting Tigers/Bayou Bengals
M State Bulldogs/Dawgs
Mizzou Tigers/(no secondary mascot)
Ole Miss Rebels/(no secondary mascot but have a black bear costume)
Tennessee Volunteers/Vols (also have a live bluetick coonhound)
UGA Buldogs/Dawgs
Vandy Commodores/(no secondary mascot)

I actually think this isn't a bad mascot, and I don't know why Ole Miss cringes at it so much. Central Arkansas is the Bears, and I like their stuff.
When University of Arkansas was voting for the "school colors", heliotrope, a shade of light purple, took second place. UCA took it up as theirs.
