Same with the St Louis Cardinals in 2011. The brewers won the division but lost to the eventual WS champs in the playoffs
I wont argue who won the national championship in 2011
But to compare the format to pro sports is asinine, to say the least

But the BCS format clearly had no issues with a non division winner being selected
