I completely agree. But there are definitely varying levels of ridiculous.

I would say rings only for winning a Natty but I might go so far as rings for winning a primo bowl like Sugar or Orange. As for regular season conference winners or CCG winners getting to play for a Natty should be reward enough but I guess such wins could be used as tie breakers when ranking SEC schools. Vanderbilt has around a dozen conference championships but that and a buck may get you a cup of coffee at a local diner.

I respected UK when they only hung NCAA Championship banners. Then they went to Runner Up's and now they have gone to Final Fours. Ricky Bobby may have poorly phrased his comment and it should be "If you are not first, you might as well be last"
