1966 - Alabama is the 2x defending AP national champion, they start out #1, they're the only major team to win every game, and they end up finishing #3 after Michigan State and Notre Dame agreed to tie.

My dad still hates Notre Dame unconditionally because of that year. The fact that they also pulled off 4 straight wins vs Bama in the 70s that was al within 7 points intensifies his hatred of them.

No way in hell the northern press was going to allow Alabama to win an unprecedented 3 in a row and usurp Notre Dame as best program, plus the SEC was still segregated, in the middle of the civil rights movement.
That the p.o.s. George Wallace was governor of Alabama probably didn't help matters either.
