MTSU in Huntsville
Is this finalized? I'll be going to the Huntsville game again this year. Had a great time last season.

Big name teams, but not great teams. Texas should be better, but they also had the talent to be a tournament team last year, but won just a third of their games. Oklahoma should be better, but they do lose their top scorer. Even as inefficient as he was, it's never a good thing to lose. Trae Young is going to have to look like a one and done and the entire team would have to improve a ton to make them tournament quality. Memphis may be worse than they've been in their entire history. Like worse than Auburn's worst years. UMass was absolutely terrible last year as well. BYU / Minnesota will be a nice addition, but we'll only get one of them.

It's one of our best in years, that's for sure.
Has potential to be one of our worst in years if teams don't improve. Recognizable team names, but they were mostly bad to terrible last year.

No. We haven't heard any rumors or anything about MTSU. That's just a team we'd like to see in Huntsville.

You have a point. Could turn out to be good, or it could turn out to be like Auburn's schedule last year. They played UCONN and Oklahoma but they were both terrible.

Gotcha. I thought someone might have heard something I haven't.

Yeah. I figure we'll never get a Power 5 team in Huntsville, so I'd like to see us play a quality mid major team in the Tennessee Valley area. MTSU fits the bill perfectly.
We play them in football frequently, so I'd think there is a relationship between the two departments.

I think we were preseason #16 during Grant's one tournament year

Look on the bright side: those teams may be down but any wins will probably be worth more than they really should be and losses won't hurt as bad due to name recognition alone.

In the past this may have been true, but in this age where RPI reigns supreme, it isn't.

Who do you want us to play then??? It's an absolute master schedule for building RPI if you ask me. Rhode Island, Texas, Oklahoma at home (all potential top 50 RPI teams but winnable). Minnesota most likely neutral. Possible Arizona on the road. Memphis is the only bad game I see so far but they couldn't have known that it was going to be that bad when they scheduled it. Add on top of that an improved conference, and I think it's a great schedule for the team we have and what we are trying to do.

I think we'll be playing UMass and BYU. I believe this classic is a round robin, not tournament.

They haven't finalized a game or opponent, but Avery did say he wanted to continue the fame if possible

Are you sure? I thought this was only a two day event on Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.
I would think it's set up like some of the past tournaments we've been in where you play two low majors at home and then have the 4 teams play the tournament in the major location.

I wouldn't bet my life savings on it, but yeah pretty sure. It's not a true round robin since you don't play every team but not a tournament either. Opponents are already set.

I'm not saying it's going to be a bad schedule (though potentially, it could be) , I'm just saying that looking at it right now, it's not strong.
Is it possible Texas is a top 50 rpi team? Sure, but I wouldn't bet on it. I can't stress enough how terrible Texas did last year with the talent they had. They lost 2 of their top 3 players, but still should have more talent this year. Will it be enough to make them jump more than 100 spots in the RPI ranking? I don't think so, but it's possible.
Oklahoma has a long ways to go as well. While I think they have better coaching than Texas, they don't have near the talent. I'm hoping Oklahoma and Texas just break the top 100 rpi.
Rhode Island and Minnesota/BYU are both probable resume builders, but outside of that we have no confirmed teams I would call resume builders right now on the non-conference schedule.
As far as bad teams go, I consider any team outside of the top 100 bad and outside of the top 150 terrible. Texas, Oklahoma, and UMass all finished outside of top 150 and that's not including Memphis or the fillers we haven't heard of.
Would I say it's a bad schedule? No, in fact what better way to make a statement to fans than to slaughter big name teams even if they aren't any good. I just don't think the schedule is that strong. Not yet that is...

Last year's Barclays center classic had the two matchups on Friday and then a consolation game for the losers and championship games for the winners the next day.
