ISU's official fall 2016 enrollment was 36,660, an increase of nearly 1.9 percent over the previous record of 36,001 in fall 2015. The 2016 figure was about 2,500 more than the University of Iowa’s.

In September, Leath said it was time to slow down Iowa State’s recent growth. In the last decade, overall enrollment has grown by 44 percent, or 11,198 students.

Also in September, Leath announced a $1.1 billion fundraising campaign for Iowa State. The campaign, named "Forever True, For Iowa State," is the largest the school has ever had for a comprehensive campaign.

Before coming to Iowa State, Leath was vice president for research and sponsored programs at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His extensive economic development and fundraising work were a factor in his selection by the Iowa Regents.

Leath and other university presidents fought throughout the past five years to stall tuition increases and had some success, although he and other leaders say shortfalls in funding from the state could lead to a return to more severe tuition increases. Leath has been vocal in his presidency about taking steps to curb student debt.

He has been a visible champion of Iowa State’s most prominent sports teams and was involved in the hirings of Matt Campbell as football coach and Steve Prohm as men’s basketball coach. He also oversaw the most ambitious expansion of Iowa State’s football stadium since it opened in 1975.

The Iowa Board of Regents voted in summer 2015 to increase Leath's base salary 5 percent from $500,000 to $525,000.
