For one, Oxford is a shitty town, and SEC people need a break from having to visit there for a couple/three years There's no good food served in that entire town They tried to build Oxford Square to look like New Orleans. So their number one priority is to look like someone else.

Oxford isn't shitty. It's just not outstanding, like Ole Miss people make it out to be. I've never been overly impressed, in spite of every wanna-be "writer" from the University of Mississippi pleading with me to believe it is something incredible.

The food is good. The "award-winning" mostly comes from having a university-employed food-writer dump several Beard voters out on the square every year for whatever conference is it that Mr. T. Edge organizes down there. The demographics and $$ there don't support a unique or true "fine-dining" "food culture". The population and disposable income just became sufficient to support a Chipotle, for frick's sake.

The square doesn't "look like New Orleans". It looks like every other small southern town square where the town decided to preserve buildings and invest in infrastructure.

Keep growing and getting "richer" and maybe Oxford will finally get big enough to support a big ole fancy Target store. You can dream.

Maybe Wright Thompson can write about the sunset over that grand strip-mall, whenever it gets built.
