5-star QB Justin Fields earns top honor at The Opening (AL.com)
quote:

Justin Fields dazzled throughout the 7-on-7 finals at Nike Football's The Opening.

For his efforts, he was rewarded as the top player from the event. Fields was named the Elite 11 MVP and The Opening overall MVP at the Beaverton, Ore., setting.

Fields led his team to a championship in the 7-on-7 event, as Mach Speed beat Vapor Speed 31-15 behind five touchdown passes from Fields.

The nation's No. 3 overall recruit, the five-star quarterback from Kennesaw, Ga., recently visited Alabama and Auburn. He also said he plans to return to Auburn on July 13. He's in contact with Alabama assistant Brent Key, but has not set a return trip.

Read about Fields' Alabama visit and his thoughts on Auburn.

** The offensive and defensive line competition continued after it was cut short Sunday because of Greg Emerson's horrifying leg injury. Emerson, a four-star prospect from Tennessee, has Alabama in his top seven. He was carted off in a stretcher, but the good news is that it appears there is no ligament damage and he could be back in action in four to six weeks.

I didn't see the injury, as I was watching 7-on-7, but Emerson's screams could be heard from a distance away.

"He's back, he took it like a champ and we all prayed for him," four-star defensive end Tyreke Smith said.

"That just made us stronger. I like how we didn't break down. We got up from it and kept going. It was tough yesterday, but we regrouped."

Emerson, sporting crutches, announced a commitment to Tennessee on NFL Network's broadcast. Earlier in the day, North Carolina receiver Jordyn Adams, a one-time Alabama target, committed to UNC.

Jamaree Salyer of Atlanta, Ga., won the OL MVP award and Xavier Thomas of IMG Academy won the DL MVP. Both are five-star prospects. Thomas is committed to Clemson.

Check out full coverage from the event, which ended tonight. AL.com will have more recruiting interviews throughout the week with prospects from The Opening.

5-star Pennsylvania DE/OLB Micah Parsons will visit Alabama for the first time soon.

5-star North Carolina DE KJ Henry is also a high priority for Alabama

One school has replaced Auburn for No. 2 with JJ Peterson behind Alabama

Five-star 2019 LB Owen Pappoe is high on Auburn

Four-star CB Jaycee Horn talks Alabama and may not commit on July 15 after all

Harold Joiner's recruitment seems to be trending towards Auburn. Or Michigan State.

Alabama is trying to flip four-star Michigan commit Emil Ekiyor

Elite south Florida cornerback Tyson Campbell is high on Alabama

Luke Ford has emerged into an elite tight end target, and he's watching Alabama and Auburn closely.

Alabama is battling an MWC school for 4-star OL Penei Sewell

KN had a VIP update on Justyn Ross this weekend

Ross says he's been leaning to one school for two months or so. He didn't say which school but said the environment and people there are the main reason. He has a top 5 of Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Florida State but his mom has never visited the Florida schools. They plan to do that in July. Ross has visited AU 6 times this year and a 7th is likely later in July. Interestingly he says there are two schools recruiting him the hardest right now: Auburn and Clemson. Says his mom is very supportive and not pushing him anywhere. When asked what he's looking for in a school he said a place where's comfortable, can compete for playing time early and have quarterbacks. Ross is keeping an eye on QB recruiting in 2018 class and is already close with AU commit Joey Gatewood. He specifically said he fits best at AU. Also plans on waiting to commit so he can see how the season plays out and what QBs go where

KN also had a nugget out on Ross where he says based off everyone he's talked two it really seems like an AU/CLEM battle right now. KN says his gut thinks Clemson is the leader but that no commitment is coming soon. Emphasizes that results this season by AU could play huge role. Also said don't count out Bama obviously
