Auburn’s quest for a tight end

One of the most popular names in recent weeks comes from an unlikely position group: tight end Luke Ford.

The former Arkansas commit became one of the nation’s top offensive commodities when he de-committed from the Razorbacks last month. Since then, he’s begun his recruiting roundtrip to several other programs across the southeast, including Auburn.

Ford has publicly announced Alabama as his leader, but my Dawgnation colleague Jeff Sentell wrote from The Opening that the nation’s No. 4 tight end is strongly considering Georgia as well. Sentell confirmed those two programs to be leading at this time. He also noted Ford has plenty of time to decide, even considering a National Signing Day announcement.

That last piece is particularly useful for Auburn.

The Tigers are still in search for their tight end in the Class of 2018. Ford is at or near the top of the list. As for Georgia and Alabama, those programs have a few other tight end targets in mind for the class that are in the same caliber as Ford. If Ford waits until National Signing Day, a solid 2017 season could have a major effect on his perception of Auburn.

Ford and his family visited the Tigers shortly after his de-commitment. Although Alabama already named his leader, the Illinois product praised the Auburn visit, specifically his personal tour guide — Gus Malzahn. It was only the second visit he’d taken (Lovie Smith at Illinois) where the head coach hosted the visit.

A person close to Ford’s recruitment confirmed Auburn to be very much in the mix for this one, especially if the Tigers are able to flash a successful passing game this fall.

Auburn DE target posts intriguing tweet

Andres Fox took a 180-degree turn Sunday night.

The Mobile (Ala.) defensive end narrowed down to his top 3 several months ago. It’s been an Auburn vs. LSU vs. Alabama battle ever since then. Fox has taken visits to all of those schools, and after his most recent visit to Auburn — his second visit in as many weeks — he said he was on the verge of a decision.

“Probably a couple of weeks,” Fox said at the time.

That timeline appears to have shifted.

Let me start by saying: Every conversation I’ve left with Fox or someone close to him, I’ve left thinking he’d one day commit to Auburn. This decision to push back a commitment doesn’t necessarily change that, but I do think the more Fox waits, the more likely it is for Alabama or LSU to alter his stance on each of those schools.

One of Auburn’s biggest advantages has been that the Tigers were the first to offer. That obviously won’t change. But as Fox is distanced from December when Auburn kicked his recruitment off, the mystique of that first offer will likely fizzle. I still see the Tigers as the clear team to beat, but Alabama and LSU both have high interest in Fox.

This one will be interesting to track.
