Following the real arc of history, the Golden Age of the pirates ended as soon as the Royal Navy appeared even in small force. Once the Brits settled their internal issues with the Civil War, the interegnum and all that, the pirates went away pretty quick.

The pirates favored sloops with maybe 50 guys and a few small guns. The Royal Navy had frigates with 300 guys and 40 guns. So there was no fighting the Royal Navy.

The original buccaneers were organized by the real captain Morgan who was nothing like the guy on the liquor bottle. He was later the Royal governor of Jamaica. With about 600 very dangerous fighters mostly former Royal Navy, he raided Spanish ports to the tune of $2 Billion dollars in today's money. The Spanish protested to Charles II. And got a big 'frick you' for their troubles.

Morgan does not appear in 'Black Sails'. Not really a pirate he had letters of marque from the Crown. He only preyed on Spanish ships.
