The problem isn't all politics. Part of the problem is the gap gap and the decay of the middle class. My grandfather raised a family of five kids and a housewife on a house painting career. That seems crazy to a modern person. Many people need their wife to work to make ends meet that were easier to make in 1950.
Personally I have pushed for my wife to get another degree before we have kids, because I want her to have the ability to drop out of the workforce if she wants and come back maybe when the kid gets older. Daycare is expensive too.

Very valid points. A man could work a regular factory job with a wife at home and live well in the middle class with a family. Now it usually takes both just to get by. Both parents working has masked our relative decrease in standard of living
