What Was The Main Complaint About Gary Crowton as OC @ LSU?

I can't remember why Miles let him go. Was it because his buddy Cammy Cam needed a job?

Gary couldn't tell Les to shut the frick up and let him run the offense.
That's my guess.

Flanker screens non-stop to the short side of the field against press.

I thought he called some good games most of the time. Was he the OC during the undefeated season?

It is apparent the issue was Miles controlling the OC's and what they were allowed to do.

Crowton was probably fine. Les wouldn't let him work though.

At the time the complaints were what we later understood to actually be problems with Les

We all blamed the offensive woes on Crowton, until he got fired and the same problems were there 4-5 years later

Him and Miles being complete opposites led to the offense never developing much of an identity.

His offenses were scattershot grab-bag bullshite a lot of the time. Multiple formations and personnel changes are all well and good, until you're running 5 people off and on with two minutes left and the clock running, etc etc. Short-side flanker screens and hb options were the toss dive before the toss dive.
He hasn't been able to hold down a job since leaving LSU, btw

This, plus the fact Jarrett Lee gave Miles Pick-6 PTSD after the '08 season. Crowton's Offense ran pretty damn well with Matt Flynn. Miles changed his entire philosophy after '08 and it never mattered who the OC was after that.

Jarrett Lee made Les Miles arse quit offense. He went from the Mad Hatter to super conservative.
It's funny to see all the hate for Jefferson, but love for Lee.
He literally killed LSU football.
The offenses with Jamarcus and Flynn were fine then 2008 happened and the LSU offense was never the same.

well yeah
Look, Crowton had his moments. The 2008 title game was about as flawlessly called from an offensive standpoint as you will ever see. Ohio State looked helpless that day.
When he was hired by LSU someone dug up a messageboard post from a fan of one of his former teams (I wanna say BYU or Oregon) who pointed out that Crowton's offenses were spectacular his first year in a job and then declined markedly thereafter. It was certainly true at LSU.
After his first year it just always looked like his offenses tried to do too much too often. The 2010 game against Tennessee typifies this. Clock running down, LSU trailing with minimal time outs and Crowton trots off 4-5 different players every damn play regardless, until Tennessee is so discombobulated they end up with like 14 dudes on the field during the final play. This wasn't psychological warfare by design by Crowton. He just kinda called games like that.
