No, this should be the 4 BEST teams. period. If not, why even have a playoff?
All conference are not created equal.

this is THE VERY ARGUMENT that led the NCAA basketball tourney to expand to 32 and then 64 teams. Up until the mid 70's the NCAA tourney only took conference champs and UCLA won the dam thing 8 straight times.

If we're gonna have a playoff, the 4 best teams play. The champ of the Big 12 is not the same thing as the Big 10 champ, etc.
This is why the playoff will be 10 teams eventually. 5 conference champs, 5 at large teams. Anything less than 10 is not a true playoff.
