Until last night, who is the SEC football version of the Cubs?

Choices could be Ole Miss, Kentucky , Vanderbilt.
Ole Miss : was OK back in the glory days of the sport, but now can't sniff a championship
Kentucky: Just terrible in football all the time, but good in other sports. Sort of like Bulls and Bears have championships for the city.
Vanderbilt: fits the role of lovable losers.
Tough call for me.

Gamecocks ... loyal, large fanbase.

I would say UGA unfortunately, and it's not looking too promising in the future either.

Ole Miss or Vanderbilt
Both were once very good, but have struggled for decades.

I would say the UGA, Vandy, or the Hogs. The Cubs are lovable. No one gives a frick about Ole Miss.

As a Gamecock fan, I envy Cubs fans

Of course you would, even though you couldn't be more wrong.

Ole Miss
Kentucky
Vanderbilt
Texas A&M (missed out on the first 20, so they don't really qualify).

Ole Miss. No SEC titles since 1963. Have gone through periods of being absolutely terrible. UGA at least won a NC in 1980. They also have not really gone through periods of being dreadful like Ole Miss has.
An argument could also be made for Texas A&M, as it's been since the 30s since their last NC.

Definitely Ole Miss.
They have a devout following of yuppies in 3 series BMW's and haven't won anything in 65 years.
Their Steve Bartman moment was Eli tripping against LSU in 2003.

were when games weren't televised and people rarely knew much about teams around the country?

1 national championship because of a once in a lifetime player. Don't see it happening for a while. Maybe when Saban is gone.

It is impossible to make comparison. Cubs play in a real sports league. Therefore there could be no version of the Cubs in the SEC. Good try though.

I say South Carolina and its pretty easy, very loyal fanbase and they haven't won anything

It has to be Vanderbilt.
Ole Miss is too hated to be lovable losers. USCe is more like the Boston Red Sox, you know they will get there sooner or later. Georgia spent the last decade being one of the best teams in college football. Its been a while for Arkansas on the football stage but its hard to apply the lovable loser tag to a school that averages two national titles a year in other sports. No one cares about poor Moo State. And Kentucky is loathed during basketball season.
Vanderbilt fits the role, they have success in other sports but not often enough to make them obnoxious, their fans are well regarded, and most everyone would be thrilled to see Vanderbilt win a national title in football.
